Excess Winter Deaths

• During December 2008 and March 2009, 36,700 more individuals died in England and Wales during the winter months than at other times of the year. This represents a 49% increase on the 25,300 deaths in the previous period. The figure also represents the highest rate of excess winter deaths since 1999/2000.
