Call to join International Older People’s Day Demo at the Labour Party Conference

NPC members will mark International Older People’s Day by joining a Fuel Poverty Action (FPA) protest outside the Labour Party conference in Liverpool on 1st October.

Everyone is welcome to attend the demo (full details below) which will call on the government to address the misery cause by rising energy costs just as Price Cap fuel prices are due to rise again.

The FPA’s Energy For All campaign – supported by NPC – demands that every household should receive enough energy to meet basic needs without having to pay unaffordable prices.

The protest will take place as Labour Party delegates leave the conference hall for the last time, and FPA are inviting as many NPC members and supporters as possible to join them.

An FPA spokesperson says: “The average energy bill will have gone up by nearly £200 since Labour entered power last summer. One in five of us are struggling to heat our homes or use lifesaving medical equipment. Energy pricing is rigged and driving us into poverty while big firms continue to profit. We demand our fair share of cheap, clean energy from our wind and sun, to guarantee essential heating, hot water, washing, lighting and cooking for everyone. “

The demonstration on Wednesday, 1st October will invite supporters to assemble from 09:30am at the Wheel of Liverpool; with the main protest starting at 12:00pm.

The event will feature contributions from local, cross-party Liverpool councillors, as well as participation from a range of supporting organisations.  Protestors will be treated to Liverpool-themed group singing, with an open invitation for all attendees to join in.

Organisations supporting the demonstration are encouraged to make their voices heard, either by speaking at the event or providing statements for the press release. This collaborative approach aims to ensure a diverse range of voices and perspectives are included in the event’s communications.

Timetable for FPA actions:

  • Wednesday, 1st October, 12noon: The main demonstration will begin promptly to align with the closing of the conference around 12.30pm. Contrary to previous years, Prime Minister Keir Starmer will not be addressing the conference on its final day. FPA representatives will be present from early morning, and the demonstration will take place as delegates exit the venue.

  • Tuesday, 30th September, 4pm: A short demonstration will also be held  for those already in Liverpool. This will coincide with delegates leaving following the Prime Minister’s speech.

Fuel Poverty Action will be supporting a variety of other protests, including the Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) demonstration at the conference at 1pm on Monday, 29th September.

*Summary of FPA demands from the government:

  • Stop the gas rip off by delinking the price of cheap, renewably generated electricity from the much higher cost of gas

  • Distribute excess power from the wind and sun for use by people who need it

  • Improve homes with accountability to residents, proper heating systems, insulation and access to free solar generation
