NPC Northern Region join Fuel Poverty demo in Liverpool for Older People’s Day

NPC members joined a Fuel Poverty Action (FPA) protest outside the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool to mark International Older People’s Day.

The action, which took place as delegates left on the final day of the conference, called on MPs to address the hardship caused by rising energy costs, particularly to older and vulnerable people.

Older People’s Day on 1st October also coincided with the latest increase in the Ofgem Price Cap, which will see energy prices go up by a further 2% this winter.

NPC Northern Region, pictured here, were among those supporting the  FPA ‘Energy for All’ campaign, which is backed by NPC. FPA demands that every household should receive enough energy to meet basic needs without having to pay unaffordable prices.

An FPA spokesperson says: “The average energy bill will have gone up by nearly £200 since Labour entered power. One in five of us are struggling to heat our homes or use lifesaving medical equipment.”

FPA demands the government:

·       Stop the gas rip off by delinking the price of cheap, renewably generated electricity from the much higher cost of gas

·       Distribute excess power from the wind and sun for use by people who need it

·       Improve homes with accountability to residents, proper heating systems, insulation and access to free solar generation
