Every year on 1st October, people around the world come together to mark the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. The day raises awareness about the opportunities and challenges of ageing, while encouraging communities to take action to support older people.
What you can do
Whether you’re part of a local authority, charity, community group, business, care home, or simply a local resident, there are many ways you can celebrate this important day in a way that reflects the needs of your community.
Celebrate what’s already happening - Shine a light on the brilliant ways your community supports social connection — from clubs and activities to befriending schemes and neighbourhood networks.
Try something new on the day -Â Â Organise an event or activity that brings people together. Use it as a chance to share information about the range of opportunities available for older adults.
Plan for lasting connections -Â Â Build new relationships and partnerships that create regular opportunities for collaboration, intergenerational activities, and meaningful connections.
Why it matters
However you choose to take part, your involvement helps shift the conversation around ageing. By raising awareness and sparking new connections, you’ll be contributing to a future where everyone can enjoy later life with dignity, inclusion, and strong social bonds.
