NPC to hear call for tax reform at Blackpool Convention

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

The 2023 NPC Annual Convention will hear how the failing essential services that older people rely on could be fixed by a fairer tax system.

The high cost to government is often given as a reason for not investing more in crisis-hit public services such as the NHS, social care, public transport, and our inadequate state pensions.

Opening Keynote Speaker: Robert Palmer, Tax Justice UK

But Robert Palmer, Executive Director of Tax Justice UK, will tell delegates at the National Pensioners’ Convention annual conference in Blackpool on 28th June that a fairer, and more effective UK tax system could be the solution.

The convention keynote speaker commented: "We all know that public services are on their knees. NHS waiting lists are at record levels, the social care system is breaking down and our roads are crumbling.

A transformed tax system would raise the money to invest in high services that older people desperately need. For example, increasing taxes on the super-rich could bring in tens of billions of pounds each year.”

Tax Justice UK, has campaigned with partners to get the government to u-turn on various tax issues three times over the last couple of years. Most recently, they helped successfully fight for a windfall tax on the huge North Sea oil and gas profits.

Is tax system reform the answer to saving our crisis-hit health & social care?

Jan Shortt, NPC General Secretary said: “It is not acceptable for the government to say there’s no money to fix vital services that millions of us rely upon. There is a funding solution, and our members will be interested to hear the case made by Tax Justice UK.”

Delegates representing the NPC’s million plus members will gather to hear leading experts address multiple issues at The Imperial Hotel on Blackpool seafront on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th June 2023.

Tickets are priced £5 for a day or £10 for two days - but you don’t have to be an NPC member to attend! NPC General Secretary Jan Shortt hopes older people in Blackpool and surrounding areas will also come along to take part in the event.

Convention speakers will include: Simon Francis from End Fuel Poverty, John Lister from Keep Our NHS Public, Lord Davies of Brixton on the future of the state pension, and Tom Lowe from the Digital Poverty Alliance on the exclusion of older people from our increasingly online world. Plus, there will be leaders from national organisations like Age UK, Independent Age, Ageing Better, as well as the TUC, Unite the Union and UNISON.

Venue: The Lancastrian Suite, The Imperial Hotel, The Promenade, Blackpool FY1 2HB Tickets* are just £10 for the two days, or £5 for one day. You can pay on the day (cash / card) or return the form to the NPC with payment – link here: https://www.npcuk.org/post/packed-programme-of-top-speakers.

*Tickets also cover the cost of entry to our social evening on Wednesday 28th June at The Imperial Hotel with entertainment from Stars in Your Eyes-winning tribute artiste Jacky Webb as Diana Ross.
